May 2008: ELEVATION Student Competition
We are excited to dedicate this Showroom to the winners and participants from Elevation 2008, PhotoShelter's first annual student-to-pro award and competition.
Elevation 2008 gave students from over 150 photography schools and universities a chance to compete for prizes and recognition from world class judges, including:
- Paul Moakley - Senior Photo Editor, Newsweek
- Phil Bicker - Creative Director, The Fader
- Michelle Egiziano - Director of Photography, Spin Magazine
- Michele Outland - Art Director, Nylon Magazine
- Stephen Walker - Director of Photography, Nylon Magazine
- Clinton Cargill - Associate Photo Editor, the New York Times Magazine
The response was awesome! We were blown away by the quality and diversity of work submitted (many of the images were even model released). Of 394 eligible students, our judges ultimately chose 5 winners with great difficulty - based on the artist's readiness to enter the profession of photography and successful development of a unique perspective. Clinton Cargill from the NY Times said of his picks, "They were successful in executing what I thought they set out to do. I felt like they each made pictures that drew me in." And Paul Moakley at Newsweek said of Matt Lutton: "Someone I would definitely consider putting on assignment. He seems excited to shoot anywhere."
Each winning student will receive a leather portfolio, prints, and promo cards to help launch them into the professional world. We would like to recognize our partners and thank them for their generous donations:
A very warm congratulations to our winners Tiana, Matt, Mary, Antonio, and Carla - and a sincere thanks to our amazing judges, and to all of the students who submitted. Check out the Gallery and Trends section this month to see the breadth of the work submitted - the judges really did have a tough time!
With that, we wrap up Elevation 2008.
Happy to be schooled by so many A+ students,
